God, Grant Me Serenity – One Day at a Time

God, grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change,
the courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time,
enjoying one moment at a time;

Have you ever had a day where your schedule was so packed that you looked toward that day with a sense of dread? Have you ever woke up and felt a pit in your stomach and asked, “How in the world am I going to get everything I need to get done today, done?” Have you ever had the type of week where you said to yourself, “I can’t wait for Friday to get here!”

God, Grant Me Serenity – Courage

God, grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change,
the courage to change the things I can,

In the previous post, I wrote that change is a scary thing. It can be exciting or terrifying. It can fill us with anticipation or anxiety. Some change we have a choice in, while others come upon us whether we like it or not. The change we have a choice in requires us to have courage.

God, Grant Me Serenity – Acceptance

“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change…”

Change is uncomfortable. There are some changes that are exciting. On my wedding day, I knew that my life would never be the same. We took pictures before the wedding, and I stood on a wooden bridge at Sedgwick County Park. I was facing one direction, and my wife was going to come up behind me. The photographer would take pictures of the first look. I remember that moment very clearly. I felt butterflies. For the first time in a little over a year, I was nervous. I was back in the past, when I asked my wife out to coffee for the first time.

God, Grant me Serenity – Introduction

When things get off kilter in my life, I like to listen to music. Whether it’s general busyness or something that completely shakes me, listening to a good song can really bring me back down to earth. It can also take me to a place of really deep waters. Music speaks to me in ways that very few other things can. When someone else puts words to something I can’t, it makes me feel like I’m not alone. In some ways, it feels like a God appointed moment and kinship with a brother or sister in Christ.

Prayers can be like that too.
